Performance belongs to the assembly
A fire doorset is tested as an assembly: a leaf of a particular construction, in a particular frame, with particular seals, hinges, closer, lock and — if fitted — glazing, installed into a particular supporting construction. The result describes that assembly. It does not describe a product name.
So "our FD30 door achieves EI 30" is not a complete statement. The complete statement names the configuration and the evidence: this leaf construction, within these size limits, in this frame type, with hardware from this permitted list, achieves this classification under this report.
What a configuration record holds
Variables: the dimensions and options that can vary, with their permitted ranges — leaf width and height, leaf thickness, glazing aperture, frame section.
Permitted components: for each position in the assembly, which specific components are allowed, grouped so that alternatives are visibly alternatives rather than a flat list. Three approved closers are one decision with three answers, not three unrelated facts.
Constraints: the rules that link them. If glazing option VP-A is selected then the intumescent seal must be type S3. If the leaf exceeds 1000 mm then a third hinge is required. These are the rules that a specification sheet expresses as footnotes and that get lost.
Where drift comes from
A component goes out of production and is substituted with an equivalent. A customer asks for a wider leaf and it is agreed on a call. A closer is upgraded and the datasheet is updated but the evidence link is not. None of these is negligent; each of them can put a manufactured doorset outside the configuration the evidence covers.
Recording the permitted set explicitly turns each of these into a question with a visible answer at the moment it comes up, rather than a discovery two years later.
Tie the evidence to the configuration, not the product
When each piece of evidence names the configuration it covers, two useful things become possible. You can ask which configurations are covered by which evidence, and see the gaps. And when evidence is withdrawn or narrowed, you can see immediately which configurations — and therefore which orders, drawings and claims — are affected.
