Fire Product Record
A QR code is only as good as the record behind it
Generating a QR code takes seconds. Committing to serve what it points at, correctly, for the life of the product is the part that needs designing.
A code that encodes one thing: the permanent public URL of the product record. Nothing about the product is stored in the code itself.
Not a requirement in Great Britain
No law here requires a QR code on a construction product. The Construction Products Regulation requires identification — a type, batch or serial number, a name or trade mark, a contact address — and requires the declaration and safety information to accompany the product where they apply. It specifies no data carrier.
Where a data carrier does appear in legislation it is in the EU: Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 provides for one alongside the construction digital product passport, applying from 8 January 2026. The UK reform documents published on 25 February 2026 point towards a unique identifier and a data carrier, but nothing has been mandated or endorsed — we record that direction as EXPECTED. Specifiers and certification schemes may also ask for scannable identification, which is a contract or scheme rule rather than a legal duty.
Every record here has one
A published record has a QR code that encodes nothing but its permanent public URL. It is available as SVG for artwork and as PNG for labelling systems, both generated from the record so they cannot drift from it.
The code encodes the product family identifier, never a version. Revisions change the record behind the link, not the link, so labels already in the field stay valid.
What the person scanning it gets
The current published record: what the product is, which publication and revision they are looking at, the intended use, the configurations, the claims, the evidence supporting each claim, the limitations, and when it was last updated. Plus a clear banner if they have reached a superseded publication, with a link to the current one.
Machine consumers get the same content as JSON at a predictable URL, with the snapshot hash in a response header.
What it does not mean
The presence of a QR code says nothing about performance, conformity or approval. It is a pointer. We would not put a badge on it, and we would treat any product that advertises a QR code as evidence of compliance with something as a warning sign.
Common questions
What happens if we withdraw a product?
The link keeps working and says the record has been withdrawn, with the date. A dead link tells the person holding the label nothing; an honest one tells them to contact you.
Can the code go on the leaf?
That is a labelling and durability question for you and your certification body. We generate the artwork; where it goes and how it survives site conditions is a decision about the product.
What this product does not do
Fire Product Record helps manufacturers organise product information, configurations, performance claims and supporting evidence. It does not determine whether a product complies with applicable construction-product law or replace technical, conformity-assessment or legal judgement. Manufacturers remain responsible for the accuracy and approval of published product information.
Bring one product family under control first
Start with the family you get asked about most. One version, its configurations, its claims and the evidence behind them.
